Tapanappa Foggy Hill Pinot Noir 2018

Cool site, warm year, as Brian Croser pitches it in the accompanying letter - detailed, and insightful as ever - with the sample.

An expressly aromatic take on Pinot Noir: Chinese five spice, sandalwood, something Plum like, a touch of Goji Berry even. Exquisite, haunting, certainly captivating.

Supple, lithe - certainly initially so on entry - before a slight firmness and fine grain of tannin sweeps across the palate. A persistent line of flavour carries, seemingly perpetually. Haunting - a word I wanted to introduce, save for the fact I'd already done so. 93/94

Zonte's Footstep Scarlet Ladybird Rosé 2019

With Spring just around the corner, a Berry laden Rosé was just the ticket as overnight lows start to climb and lead us to humidity.

And with those thoughts came so many musical excerpts, thoughts of summer breezes (makes me feel fine), and listening to the wind (of my soul, where I'll end up only God only knows), not sure where those thoughts took me, or what the answer is (the answer my friend is blowing in the wind).

Those berry notes certainly evoked such thoughts, and those same notes consistent across the palate too. Beauty can often lie in simplicity, here the generosity takes this beyond the purely simple.

A delightful start to warmer months, with its kiss of fruit sweetness. 88

Zonte's Footstep Bolle Felici Prosecco

Pithy citrus aromatics, conveys freshness.

It's certainly fresh and lively, with a curl of citrus acidity, coarse and broad in presentation. Pithiness and zest, softer back palate.

Reasonable length, in that citrus derived manner. Refreshment factor high. 88

Zonte's Footstep Blackberry Patch Cabernet 2017

Fleurieu Cabernet is certainly an unsung hero. It may lack what many may consider the classic Cab aromatics, of say Margaret River, but as a regional/varietal combination it can just sing.

The back label preamble - and there are always many auto-suggestive reasons to avoid reading such - talk of the perfect blackberry pie being imagined upon the fruit being picked. And yeah, I can see it (I told you it was bad form).

There's a succulence, a black-fruited sweetness to the core of the palate, it segues to this fruit/spice sweetness that yields to the tannin. A lingering presence of cedary oak just adds to the allure, giving a fine, savoury, length. Spot on. 91

Juicy, mid-bodied; blackcurrant and Blueberry, gives freshness and a semblance of acidity, gives length and flow. 91

Zonte's Footstep Scarlet Ladybird Rosé 2018

Strawberry in the main, a sweeter accent, akin to a Berry coulis; Citrus, like mandarin segments.

Possesses a tartness, a tang of freshening acidity. Primarily Citrus in terms of its main thrust and drive. Pretty simple proposition to be honest all up. 88

Zonte's Footstep Lady Marmalade Vermentino 2018

Vermentino a few years back was touted as the next "great white hope" of Australian viticulture - they come along every so often, championed by a producer, well regarded scribe or such - being a somewhat drought tolerant variety that retains natural acid well. Such things take time, particularly amongst a wary consumer.

There were some amongst the wine cognoscenti that tried to associate the variety with the humble Sardine, that went seemed to go down like a led herring. Pun certainly intended.

As a variety it, and this example indeed does so, offers a fresh and fragrant aroma, redolent of Summer days. Here: stonefruit, citrus, so yes fresh and fragrant.

But the palate offers both texture, how it feels in the mouth, roll and around and it's almost chewy. Beyond that a minerality, a tingle as it dances across the palate. Fresh and refreshing. Perhaps more for the summer months. 90

Vinteloper: a New Identity and New Releases

Recently I had the pleasure of attending a gathering in Brisbane's New Farm Park for the launch of two new wines, and the reveal of a new visual identity, from winemaker David Bowley of Vinteloper Wines.

Opting to go the way of the trend of creating a version of a word minus its vowels, the new identity is bold, punchy and starkly simple. Losing the former flourishes of the Vinteloper logo, the end result is akin to paring back the label to enable a better look at what's underneath.

Indications
The public had a little insight into the direction that the new visual identity might take with the release of David's 2012 Urban Winery Project Grenache (review here). That label, as with the newly released R1 2013 Watervale Riesling and 2013 PG Fleurieu Pinot Gris were designed by David's "future wife" - as he charmingly refers to her - Sharon Hong.

A member of the medical profession, and clearly a talented artist, I asked David if he had given Sharon a brief: "deliberately not, I wanted her interpretation of the wines to be represented in the design".

It could be said that David himself has always possessed an artistic mien. In 2011 he released his two Riesling (Watervale and Odeon) to wine critics with an accompanying release, drawing the distinction between the two under the heading Art (the Odeon) vs Science (the Watervale). The brand extension has also been taken further in the past with the released of Vinteloper skateboards. Innovation? Perhaps.

Not being an art critic, I best describe the new label's style as line drawings with watercolour overlaid. To me they draw some inspiration from 1960s artwork, with strong visual imagery and a mix of bold colours and some pastels. But I suggest that is one of the great things about art, for as with wine their appeal and interpretation is a very personal thing.

2013 R1 Watervale Riesling - $26, 11%, Screwcap
David's 'standard' Watervale Riesling, rebadged as the R1 (to denote it from the Odeon, or R2 as it may be?).

Exhibits the florals and possess the elegance that one often sees in wine's of the region. Pretty with some 'Asian' influence via jasmine, blossom and the citrus aromatics.

Strikes a balance between tightness and approach-ability  One thing is for sure, refreshment is guaranteed.

2013 PG Fleurieu Pinot Gris - $26, 13%, Screwcap
Showing the barest hint of colour, a slight hint of a peachy hue. Opens with a musky aroma, to taste sees a wine that's richly textured.

Hints of mineral; generously layered finish. A touch "dirty" as one of my fellow attendees put it. This is a good Gris.

Aside from the artist's medical background, make what you will of the ribcage design on the label.

The Future
David was fairly forthright, he announced that he would no longer be making a Sauvignon Blanc. Not that he didn't want to, rather the decision was more pragmatic in that he saw that particular market as sufficiently crowded already, that he felt his efforts were best directed elsewhere. Expect to see the extension of the new identity as new vintages come on board, expect to see new varieties being explored and played. David seems a man enjoying his craft.

Keep an eye out for more from this pretty exciting brand.

d'Arenberg Twentyeight Road Mourvédre 2004

At 8 years of age this 'Fleurieu' Mourvédre from d'Arenberg, comprising 60% McLaren Vale fruit and 40% Langhorne Creek, is looking pretty good.  Still throwing some hallmark Mataro fruit character: sour cherry and heady plum.  Coupled with secondary character that comes with age, darker black olive tapenade, old wood, some damp earthen character and cured meats.

Entry shows a wine smooth, yet also fairly solid, it has a touch of weight to it, ably supported by raspy, sandy tannin.  Spice is evident, pepper and cinnamon betwixt some red fruit character - the classic battle you often see with Mataro, the tussle betwen fruit and savoury/ spice characteristics.

Fantastic length, the core of spice wrapped around a conveyor belt of tannin.  There's still some lift left in it, 3-4 years in the cellar perhaps, if opened you'd want to consume it straight away.  Available as a cellar release from d'Arenberg and select retailers, under cork - the Gods were on-side this time.  91 - Very Good
