Robert Stein Half Dry Riesling RS15 2022

Fruit from neighbouring GI Orange is used to make this off-dry Riesling from Mudgee based Robert Stein.

Apple, mango, citrus - all combine on the nose and provide the lead in to a palate with a moderate sweetness.

A minerally vein gives the wine greater presence through the mid and final thirds. Delicately balanced, the sweeter edge works within itself, textured not cloying. 93

Robert Stein Half Dry RS15 Riesling 2018

This one slipped to the back of the pile, and to be honest when I found it I was waiting for an appropriate food moment to attempt to pair with. Do love a half/off-dry Rizza with a bit of chilli.

Really pronounced lemon aroma, lemon sherbet meets preserved lemons. Fresh, fragrant, and a floral touch creating an allure.

More of the same on the palate, yields to a zest and minerally aspect. Touch of weight from the retained sugar, pitched well against the natural acidity. Balance, as ever, is key - the sugar/acid mix working in unison to deliver. 93

Ferngrove Off-Dry Riesling 2017

Ooh, this one's a goer, more of the tropical mien to it - think something like a mandarin and lime marmalade, a little cumquat for good measure.

The aroma carries more of that subtle minerality that you might suspect betrays a sweetness within. More of that limey citrus on the palate, a harder edge with some zesty acidity balancing out the sweeter aspects. 88

Patina Scandalous Riesling 2014

Very pronounced citrus here: lemon, lime, lemon butter. There's even something a touch more tropical: suggestive of pineapple juice

The palate thick and broad, the residual sweetness (18 g/l) shining through - albeit lacking some balancing acid. Fruit quality high, giving some length. Overall simple, missing that balancing acid, but inoffensive. 87

Robert Stein Half Dry Riesling 2016

I do like a little off-dry Riesling, something with just a little retained sugar (here 10g residual), just works wonders at cutting through some devilish spice.

Lime, florals, a suggestion of fennel pollen.

Immediately it marries both acidity balanced against a little sweetness.  It's a punch of flavour, a veritable explosion that just gently recedes across the palate.

Paired this coconut milk and chilli poached chicken. The RS here more than a match for that touch of spice. Preferred this to the 2015. 91

Some Young Punks Monsters Monsters Attack Riesling 2013

Purchased this with the express intent of pairing it with a favoured chilli prawn dish of the household.

Offers more in the fleshy tropical fruit spectrum than what you'd expect from a traditional dry Clare Riesling.

Textural spread, the sugar adds width and a broad fleshy spread on entry. Citrus more prevalent, comes across as a syrupy fruit salad when confronted with a little spice - sadly lacking there. Actually preferred this as a stand-alone wine, unable to take the heat, I took it out of the kitchen into the lounge. 89
