The Little Wine Co Lyre Lyre 2023

A white blend of Verdelho, Pecorino, Vermentino, and Albarino (order as listed on the label, not necessarily by contribution to the blend).

Beautiful aromatics: frangipane, almond paste, snow pea tendril. Has a minerally suggestive edge that just catches the nasal cavity - perhaps a little white pepper / rotund one note.

Musk and minerally through the middle, pleasing enough texture a tingly spine of acid. A most pleasing all-rounder. 92

Berton Vineyard Alfresco Vermentino 2022

Green apple, ripe pear, waxy citrus.

There's a lovely texture on initial entry, but it soon yields to a minerally acid spread before a phenolic pucker.

The acid might be a touch perky for some, but after its initial blaze is does gently ebb towards its conclusion. Lovely balance and length. Multi-faceted, of its many parts. 92

Chalky citrus, saline whiff - like warm sun on sea kissed rocks.

Citrus, pithy, minerally edge - with an orange twist coursing through the finish. A summery delight. Give it a crack with some Oysters, or fried Whitebait. 92

Golden Grove Vermentino 2021

Back to Estate fruit for this vintage. It sees 20% Barrel fermentation left on lees for 2 months and 9% being fermented on full skins for 10 days.

A beautifully aromatic wine, florals and with more than a throw of stonefruit in the frame.

An initial textural spread upon entry gives way to a zesty minerality. It's fresh and refreshing, on a generous length of acidity that flows and that peachy subtlety is just refreshment personified. Superb. 93

Golden Grove Rosé Brose 2020

I tasted two separate bottles over consecutive weeks, taking notes on each, for no other reason than I could.

Challenging vintage conditions in his home region saw winemaker Ray Costanzo source fruit from the Chalmers Vineyard out at Mildura to create this Rosé, it being crafted from Sagrantino and Vermentino.

A bright, floral, quite evocative perfume. It smells of warmer days ahead, of breezes flowing through a Summer garden, strawberries on a summer berry pudding.

It's the palate that really captures the imagination, the Sagrantino - a variety known for tannins - has been well handled, providing a light phenolic rub. It's a talcum like feel that provides an initial presence, further enhanced by a lemony tang of acidity brought by the Vermentino.

Served cool, harnessing the textural components, providing focus for the citrus tinged zip - from the Vermentino component one would hazard.

Line and focus, a phenolic chalky addition supplements that profile, radiating out across the palate. It's well worked, expertly judged and more than poised to feature heavily in my drinking repertoire over the Summer ahead. 93

Yelland and Papps Second Take Vermentino 2019

Envelope purchasers as ever, this Vermentino spending a whopping 313 days on skins, and then successfully engaging the kids press it off. Good engagement.

Beautifully skinsy feel and vibe to it, redolent more like a soured beer - another style I sink readily with pleasure - with something like floral hints supplementing. The palate pervades with a lushness, textually silken, cascading across the palate.

It contains an edgy acidity, and whilst I personally love that, I suspect it will likely polarise. Yet bring on more divisive styles, forego the foursquare and the vanilla. Celebrate the artisans, the pioneers, the boundary pushers. Bravo! 94

Hastwell and Lightfoot Vermentino 2019

Vermentino was the talk of the town (and twittersphere!) back in the day, hailed as one of a new breed of somewhat more sustainable varieties, better suited to the changing growing environment.

Save that some producers latched onto this hype, with scant regard for what the variety was meant to look like from a point of origination. Not that we should always be looking to emulate a style based on a baseline reference, but if something were to differ it should at least offer something in addition.

So it's with some relief to come across this example, where the freshness and vitality have not been sacrificed, nor have the texture and boy that makes this a refreshing joy AND a versatile match with a range of foodstuffs.

It's a riot of fresh citrus - indeed you'd almost want a squeeze of this over your calamari, if you'd give some up that is - supplemented with fleshy tropical fruit.

It's not what consider a veluptuous offering, for it comes with a punch of phenolics and concludes on a drying tail of flavour. Cracking example. 92

Bremerton Special Release Vermentino 2018

Grapefruit and lemon zest carried on the briny tang of an onshore breeze.

There's a zippy line of acidity that threads nicely through the wine, holding no prisoners, leaving all in its wake.

It's freshness personifies it and calls for beachside calamari, with a drizzle of lemon, and perhaps a greasy potato scallop for good measure. Just because. 91

Angullong Fossil Hill Vermentino 2019

Snow pea tendril, citrus, a chalk and salinity on a breeze vibe. Something of more tropical bent; dripping ripe peach, pulpy mango or some such.

Tart and citrusy, the cut and thrust of acidity, probing and jabbing. About a length hangs the fruit, giving the impression of adding volume, as if to suggest either a barrel component or certainly some work. Observation of technique, nothing more.

Generous wine, one that would slake the hardiest of thirsts; versatile, as happy alone as it is in the company of food. 92

Golden Grove Tranquillo Bianco 2019

White "bitsa" blend of Sauv Blanc (45%), Vermentino (24%), Chardonnay (16%), Semillon (12%), White Muscat (3%). Semillon on full solids, added texture over sugar.

Sauv meets lemon sorbet here, gives a suggestion of sweetness on aromatic approach. Peach in the frame too: soft, sensuous, semi-dry.

Minerally tickle on entry, that dance across the palate, awakens and enlivens as if to prepare for what may come, a vinous amuse bouche! Plump around the middle, comes at the expense of length, as if concertinaed to bolster the mid-section. 88

Golden Grove Sparkling Vermentino SPV 2017

Not too many examples of Sparkling Vermentino that I can recount. This being GG's second stab at the style. Experimental, but also also from a business perspective ties up opportunity for some time given it is released as a two year old.

Upon opening it's more the bread, brioche hints that one notices. Slowly, surely, it yields subtle pear - Williams if one wishes to talk variety.

The palate, crisp and measured, a minerality and liveliness dancing across the palate. Fruit aspects more prominent here, tugging along with somewhat generosity of length. The time on lees adding width, adding to the whole. 91

Golden Grove Vermentino 2019

Winemaker Ray Costanzo has absolutely nailed this release. Packaging refresh in 2019.

The briny tang hangs long enough, a lingering moment, as if on a breeze. Carrying with it the fruit presence, of lemons, a suggestion of lime and green mango.

The barrel Ferment portion, and oak, lend the wine a lovely body. It's creamily textured, a subtle spice inflection being the wine's seasoning.

Delivers on an exquisite length. Still feels young at this stage, will settle and flesh further. 94

Golden Grove Vermentino 2018

Queensland's Granite Belt region is about as far as you can possibly get from Vermentino's native home. The GI is located some 2.5hrs South-West - inland - from Brisbane, and located at altitudes ranging from 800-900+ metres above sea level.

Yet there, in the hands of winemaker Ray Costanzo, it has a home for itself in Australia. I'm not suggesting it the ultimate region for the variety, it's just that the grape/region/winemaker combination has formed a particularly compelling case for Australia's best example of the variety - in this humble gentleman amateurs eyes at least.

Snow pea, lime and brine, subtle honeysuckle, rock melon, and grape aromatics. From the get go it possesses an allure, a sirens call to the passionate (and the thirsty).

Where Costanzo has managed to excel, in my opinion, is to employ judicious use of just the right portion of barrel fermentation, sufficient to aid texture, yet not at the expense of the acidic profile. To that end, a small inclusion of Semillon (11%) was included in this vintage.

It gives the wine shape and focus, yet aids the overall composure and delivers exquisite length. Quite superb. 93

Yelland and Papps Second Take Vermentino 2018

A whopping 310 days on skins, before the Papps kids earned their supper by pressing it off.

Has that skinsy, herbal tea/Jasmine tea vibe going on, a suggestion of tart citrus ripples across the nose. Beautifully balanced, aspects of baking spice sit meshed into the wine's core, it's textural as it conveys presence across the palate, a fine acidic line the nervous system about which the wine brims.

Multi-faceted, offering something at each and every turn. You feel that Michael and Susan have this finely tuned now, the seventh vintage for the Second Take range, fifth for this Vermentino, and it's a slick operation. 93

Bremerton Vermentino 2017

Floral and fragrant, has that peachy pop of flavour right at you from the off. Lemon fresh and pulp add the essential elements that take you to a rocky Mediterranean shoreline, waves breaking and adding a saline zip to the air.

Briney, with a moderate phenolic edge and generous tail of crisp acidity. Chill hard and enjoy. Statements that apply equally to consumer and wine. 90

Atze's Corner Wild Rose Vermentino 2018

It's been a while since I've had the pleasure of seeing some Atze's Corner releases. Sadly in the month that has passed since tasting this release, the "Sold Out" sign has gone up on the Atze's website for it.

Vermentino has been amongst the next "great white hopes" of Australian wine for approaching a decade now. As a variety it's clearly suited to warm regions, with its ability to retain acid even with heat.

As a wine, this particular example, highly fragrant, floral. Honeysuckle, apple blossom meets peach skins.

Has a semblance of texture, mouthfeel, rock melon kind of vibe going on. Generous all round package with that texture, flavour and a clip-along acidity driving length. 91

Zonte's Footstep Lady Marmalade Vermentino 2018

Vermentino a few years back was touted as the next "great white hope" of Australian viticulture - they come along every so often, championed by a producer, well regarded scribe or such - being a somewhat drought tolerant variety that retains natural acid well. Such things take time, particularly amongst a wary consumer.

There were some amongst the wine cognoscenti that tried to associate the variety with the humble Sardine, that went seemed to go down like a led herring. Pun certainly intended.

As a variety it, and this example indeed does so, offers a fresh and fragrant aroma, redolent of Summer days. Here: stonefruit, citrus, so yes fresh and fragrant.

But the palate offers both texture, how it feels in the mouth, roll and around and it's almost chewy. Beyond that a minerality, a tingle as it dances across the palate. Fresh and refreshing. Perhaps more for the summer months. 90

Yelland and Papps Second Take Vermentino 2017

Spends a whopping 271 days on its skins, to put that into context, ordinarily a white wine might spend 2-3 hours on skins, a Rosé something up to 24 hours (for a little colour extraction) and a red wine, anything between 8-20 days (dependent on how much colour, flavour, tannin extraction the winemaker is seeking)*.

Always intriguing to see what extended skin contact throws up aromatically, gone out of the window the conventional aromoids per the base variety. Here, something approaching tinned mandarin segments meets pickled/cured ginger. Aromatic spices are certainly thrown up a fair bit here, white pepper and mace spring to mind.

Slippery textured, fair glides across the palate with incredible ease. Citrus is the dominant flavour, in this lemon barley and sherbet manner. It's actually quite a delicate wine, for all its bluster - a little peach juice in the mix softens things up.

It's always interesting to see where it's wild ferment ride has taken it, it's a beaut and stands up incredibly well even 24hours after opening! 92

* Durations a rough guide. Winemaker intent and grape variety all play a part in the actual duration spent on skins.

Yelland and Papps Vermentino 2017

From one of the early producers of the variety, grapes are hitting their late teens now, planted in the early noughties.

Opens with what appears to be a little smokey, burnt citrus - it's fleeting, before the fresh citrus show launches itself onto your olfactory organ and bursts forth.

It's the palate where the real magic happens. It's a riot of citrus, backed up with suggestions of Meyer lemon and guava-esque tones. Tropical it ain't, but it is really about freshness personified.

It marries acidity and a little textural nuances, giving - primarily - length, aided by a little width. 91
