Preveli Methode Traditionnelle Blanc de Noir 2010

Time on lees has lent this savoury notes, of Wholemeal bread, Quince, red apple and light spice.

Citrus elements, an assertive petillence - not such the finesse of finer examples - it's clean, and the cleansing acidity does its job.

Clean and fresh with some complexity from age. 88

Mitchell Sevenhill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Even at eight years old this is still throwing a fair whack of fruit here. The requisite black fruits that one might expect from a Cabernet are present and correct.

That this comes from a good vintage and from a good vintage for Clare reds is noted, that the winery is retailing this for under $30 as an eight year old is all the more remarkable.

There’s an elegance here, in that fine framed manner. Delicate tannin is married perfectly to lingering remnants of fruit.

More of that blackcurrant pastille brings proceedings home. Excellent wine. 92

Alkoomi Blackbutt Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

"The Blackbutt is a fine tuned blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), Malbec (14%), Cabernet
Franc (5%) and Merlot (1%) from the oldest blocks of estate grown fruit."

Unsure of the release strategy here, but it is sent to market as a seven year old wine.

Subtlety is the watchword here: restrained, refined, almost regal. Cassis, mulberry and a savoury sense about it.

Composed, balanced, possesses structure that carries the black fruit flavour long across the palate. 91

Ridgemill Estate Cabernet Malbec 2010

Leads with a funky edge, slightly herbal, bit of black olive, damp undergrowth.

Soft, supple, rounded black fruit profile. Gentle tannin, almost velvety in texture. It's barely medium bodied, spice disarms, a little licorice.

Seemingly yields each more each subsequent visit. Mouth coating feel. A delight. 89

Alkoomi Jarrah Shiraz 2010

Named after a native Eucalypt from the area where the grapes that input into the wine are grown. Sees an increase in price of 46 on the 2009, and now in the 2010 guise released as a five year old.

Showing that additional age, with malty-mocha tones, touch of leather and black fruit by way of blackberry, mulberry and a little plum.

Smooth of palate, with the familiar sour tang from the '09. Nicely pitched against the black fruit so present. An Oliver-esque sprinkle of spice and licorice. Gentle on the finish, good for a leisurely Sunday roast now. 92

Swirl Sniff Spit - Notes from an Overseas Experience

Usual disclaimer: "Swirl, Sniff, Spit" is a monthly, Brisbane based, tasting group that I am a co-organiser of. For the month of February, the theme was that of ‘Overseas Experience’ whereby all wines were made overseas by Australia winemakers. Tasting notes as written, save for the odd tidying up and marrying of background notes that were provided to attendees, for readability.

Ulithorne ‘Corsus’ Vermentinu 2013, Corsica; Winemaker: Rose Kentish
Rose Kentish opted to whisk the family off to Europe in 2009 after a challenging vintage in her native McLaren Vale. It’s a journey she has made each year since. The Vermentinu (Vermentino) is the third successive vintage made.

Clarity of aroma here: lemon, that most freshest of citrus, plucked from a tree, raschi and leaf intact; shows a little green olive, texture - rolls around the palate. Little phenolic pinch on its tail. Needs the sea, a rocky coastline and possibly a plate of whitebait, crisp with a little salt. Simply devine - clearly evokes the Mediterranean for me. 91/2

Le Grappin 1er Cru Greves Blanc 2012, Beaune; Winemaker: Andrew Nielsen
Andrew Nielsen was working in high-end advertising, for publications such as The Economist, when a bottle of Dujac’s Clos de la Roche became his epiphany wine. It’s a response I can relate to,  given my own expletive lead introduction to Andrew’s Greves Blanc. Chardonnay in Les Greves is rather rare, a mere 2% of plantings across its 31 hectares. From 50 year old vines, this had me leading with “Fuck!” - mealy, creamy - stonefruit and citrus; powerful - such a concentrated wine, of depth and spice - dense and powerful. Superb. 94

Mayer The Doctor Remstal, Kabinett Trocken, 2011; Winemaker: Timo Mayer
Timo Mayer’s family hails from Germany - as does Timo himself. I gleaned a quote from Timo, published elsewhere, on this wine: “It’s a macerated, high solid wild barrel fermented Riesling Kabinett trocken. Its not how the folks do it over there but its what I like, textural and voluptuous”. Shows a little aromatic herb, citrus, lemon curd; fuller feel on the palate - something that possibly might be mandarin segments 90.

Tunkalilla Eola-Amity Hills Oregon Riesling 2008; Winemaker: Brian Croser
In 2005, Brian and Ann Croser purchased an old Christmas tree farm in Oregon, clearing some of the trees to plant out to Riesling and Pint Noir.  This 2008 was from their first vintage and Croser continues to make wines in Oregon each year. Tunkalilla is named for a beach in the Fleurieu (where Croser has the ‘Foggy Hill’ vineyard). Showing some development, possibly a little taint; sugar more evident here at 8.6 g/l (dry is about 2). Palate largely flat some hints of miineral with herb and citrus. 89

Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre Aux Vergelesses 2011 Winemaker: Jane Eyre
Eyre was a hairdresser in her native Melbourne when, somewhat serendipitously, she struck up a conversation with a customer about wanting to gain some experience in the wine industry. Said customer just happened to be the wife of leading Australian wine scribe Jeremy Oliver.

Overall ’11 is considered a good vintage, small crop, high prices. It is considered that Beaune can offer some relief to the buyers’ pocket compared to other better known communes. This typically offers a really attractive, perfumed style. Eyre is also the Asst Winemaker at Dom Newman, and since 2011 has made wine under her own name. Fine perfume of florals, and cherry aromas that waft out of the glass; beautifully elegant, well structured wine 94

Andrew Nielsen - Le Grappin
Le Grappin 1er Cru Boucherottes; Winemaker: Andrew Nielsen
From low on the slope near the Pommard boundary, to the West of Beaune. Typically a fruity, as opposed to tannic, expression. Nielsen is fastidious about vineyard work; opts to use smaller barrel houses to be able to work to get the right level of toast for the style sought. Florals almost to violets here - purple if i can just offer a colour. Light on entry, almost bouncy - yet with a little depth, spice and good tannin structure. Pretty special. 93

Two Men in Mendoza Malbec 2012; Winemakers: Dan Sims and Ben Edwards
Two men AKA Dan Sims (PinotPalooza and Game of Rhones) and Ben Edwards (formerly Halliday’s right-hand-man, now tree-changer). Wanted to make a wine in Argentina, make something about making a wine, a wine they wanted to be….just bloody drinkable. From Uco Valley in Mendoza. Plum, mulberry, squishy black fruit; easy-going, juicy - ‘soil’ style, a drinker. Good grain tannin, bright acidity nicely balanced against the fruit. 90/1

Jed Wines Uco Valley Mendoza Malbec 2012
So, Two Men make a Malbec – one upmanship form the three men behind Jed making a Malbec, also from Uco Valley, Mendoza. Woody, spice and savoury character here. Sandalwood - less acidic, not as ‘bright’ - more structure. 92

L’Imposteur Collioure AOC 2010; Winemaker: Adam Foster
Adam Foster
From Collioure, the designated AOC for table wines – if fortified they’re known as Banyuls (heavenly chocolate match!). Foster, “pan rocker”, turned Sommelier (ex-Lakehouse), Salami maker, now winemaker.

L’Imposteur – as the French call him. Framboise with a little savoury edge - like its fortified counterpart, you could see this even working with chocolate. Touch of lift, moving to that savoury, sous bois character on the palate - good entry, moving to a little wild herb and red fruit. 91

Fletcher Barolo ‘Alta Pete’ 2010; Winemaker: Dave Fletcher
50% Treiso from 350m in altitude, this is one of the cooler areas of Barbaresco and selected because of this reason, and 50% Barbaresco commune. 2010 a ripper Barolo vintage. Winemaker Fetcher was once banned from entering the Alternative Wine Varieties Show for he only made Nebbiolo…go figure. The savoury imbued with a little floral: think pouch tobacco, a touch of clove with rose petal florals and plum skin adding that extra dimension. Feels dusty, powdery, well extracted tannin here that move to a firmness, letting your palate know you've been Barolo-ed. 93

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Exceptional Cabernet here from Leeuwin Estate.

Initially leafy, underlying mint, coffeed oak in the mix. With time, the aromatic balance shifts with the mint become more prominent, in tandem with chocolate coated berries.

Poise, elegance, balance - walks with grace and a straight back. Demands attention, makes you adjust your own posture against its own assuredness.

Berry mix - redcurrant, raspberry - against cedar. Look here for a definition of balance and poise, traits that become increasingly evident with time open.

Concludes with a glorious tail of acid, fine and integrated tannin, a little crunch underfoot. Effortless, classic line delivered by the fruit, seems like it will never end. 95

Leeuwin Estate Prelude Vineyard Cabernet Merlot 2010

Cherry, tobacco and cocoa - mix of aromas on show here. Smokey, rolling tobacco - not sure which brand - show up as secondary aromatics.

Lovely medium bodied wine: fine tannin, modicum of acid, more tobacco and leafy notes. Ultra-fine body - feels classy, good quality wine.

Evenness through the finish, even flow - thoughts arrive like butterflies - unforced. Take notice of this classy individual, a very good wine. 92

d'Arenberg The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

I'm not prone to call favourites - but if I were, amongst the d'Arenberg icons, then the Coppermine Road could possibly hold the position of first amongst equals.

Plum, damson and notes of damp earth. Heady you might say. Chocolate and wafery oak only add to what is an already inviting package.

It needs a little time, opening up to reveal spice: clove and a touch of pepper; leaf - savoury notes, licorice twists - fruit, present, but secondary. That chocolate - some might say, regionality - depth comes on more over a second day at the expense of licorice and spice.

Excellent bassy resonance, enveloping you in a warm and wintery fuzziness. Top drawer. 94

Voyager Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2010

Exquisitely varietal, unequivocally regional. Bay, bush and cedar - the latter a wonderful seasoning to the wine's aromatic profile. Cocoa dusted, dusky violet and a little earth.

Elegantly medium bodied, sees black olive, capsicum and a little herb. A good framework to the wine - a gentle acidic freshness, fine tannin - all indicative of a good life ahead.

Really enjoyed how well the oak has integrated here - noticeable, not dominant - for the wine spends 19 months in 50% new French. A pleasure. 93

d'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz 2010

An excellent cellar-worthy prospect here. Gains in stature with time and air; unfurling, stretching and bulking up. If you approach now, please do so with a good decant.

Plum and black fruit, a dusting of dark cocoa powder with sweet oak perfume. Shows good weight on entry, with violets and plums adding to the package.

Touch of char in the middle, a chalky rub of tannin. Big and grunty, excellent length of flavour. Will be long lived. 93

K1 by Geoff Hardy Cabernet Sauvigon 2010

I must confess that my head has been turned in favour Hills Cabernet of late, a run of some good vintages and having seen some progression of the variety - admittedly notedly from K1. I opted to open the 2010 and 2012 (here) side-by-side, sighted - that is not served 'blind'.

Attractive bouquet garni aromatics, herbal with floral elements by way of some violets. Toasty oak tickles the nasal cavity, choc-mint in the mix also.

Black fruits general - veering to defined blackcurrant - vanilla oak, firm of tannin. Acid still shows its hand. Length is somewhat generous, residual oak and toast. Solid. 91

d'Arenberg Ironstone Pressings GSM 2010

d'Arenberg's Icon releases (Ironstone Pressings, Dead Arm, Coppermine Road) have all received a brand facelift with the 2010 releases. The trademark red sash is still front and centre, the label cleaner, a contrast to the inky-black contents within. The torn edge provides a departure from the previous narrower profile and arched edges seen on the range up until 2009. Better or not? Your call, I'm here to judge what's within.

The price seems to have come down on last year, unless I'm wrong (rare, not impossible). The vintage in question, 2010, was kinder to the vines from the heat of 2009, but that said the Grenache dominant here doesn't mind a touch of warmth.

Malty oak, chocolate, touch of fresh sod, herb and a volume of red fruits filling the olfactory organ as you take it in. Squarely full, perhaps a but four square; tannin initially powdery move to a lovely fine-grain.

The wine possesses excellent depth of flavour, persistent, exhibiting the structure, fruit and persistence to aid longevity. A very good release. 93

Willunga 100 'The Tithing' Grenache 2010

Made only in exceptional vintages, the 'Tithing' in Saxon represented a sub-unit of the '100'. Whereas the '100' represented 100 households, the 'Tithing' was the next level down, representing around 10 households (I never knew they were into decimilisation so early...)

Grenache specialists Willunga 100 sent on a few samples for International Grenache Day, of all the 'insert grape variety' days that have - or still - exist, Grenache for me has always been the one that at least has its roots founded with serious intent, for the betterment of the variety, being born out of the International Grenache Symposium.

For 2014, there is an International Grenache Day, falling on 19th September, refer to Facebook if you're keen to find out more.

That's a rather long-winded preamble to get to the wine in question.

Red fruits familiar to the variety and the region, yet it eschews the overt raspberry jam that can curse some examples. In tandem with the lighter red fruit, it possesses a darker, savoury bent.

A wine medium of body, just veering toward fulness, the savoury and spice elements mesh together well and move toward notes of liquorice. Fine tannins, supple, a little char, it somehow belies its 14+% alcohol, with a deftness and elegance through the finish. An impressive example. 93

Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2010

Comes in a lovely embossed regional bottle. From there my love diminished.

Opens well: hedgerow, herb/garrigue, lovely savoury-woody spice with dusty earthen notes over a little red fruit. Medium bodied, hints of mineral, licorice - fruit a little lacking on the palate.

Medium intensity, reasonable savoury length - yet it lost its way quickly, life and vitality sadly ebbing away from it. OK, my money would be much better spent elsewhere. 89

K1 Adelaide Hills Vintage Sparkling 2010

K1's second successive vintage sparkling wine produced. It's Pinot Noir dominant (80%), with a residual amount of Chardonnay.

Price wise it's pitching itself in pretty serious territory, it is a quality offering, but one wonders how it's viewed by consumers against the perpetual price wars of marque Champagne by the large format retailers?

Of a peachy golden hue, opens with sourdough, baked goods, hints of marzipan, red apple pulling through at the back.

A wine that's fine on entry, segueing to a little depth and structure. Interesting contrast between that finesse and leesy, yeasty depth going on. It's generous, long and fairly persistent. Good depth going on here. 91

Mitchell Harris Sabre 2010

The 2008 Sabre from Mitchell Harris was a sparkling addition to the portfolio. They skipped a vintage in 2009 and bring to market this fine boned example from 2010.

Delicacy, stone-fruit and a glimpse of red fruits coming through, supplemented with a little almond biscotti. It's Chardonay dominant (75%, Macedon) with the balance being Pyrenees Pinot Noir.

Delicate, fine boned, but a good frame on which to put some weight. There's a little mineral, biscuit through the finish which is on a persistent good length. Lasting presence. Nice and dry aperitif style with a mere 5g/l dosage. 92

K1 by Geoff Hardy Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2010

Sensed that this is just waking from a slumber, unravelling, unfurling, revealing itself.

Pencil shaving oak, spice, black fruit with a touch of dried herb in the mix too. Possesses a medium bodied elegance, a mineral coolness that also supports black fruit by way of plum and cherry with a little lift of blue fruit.

In many respects its a wine of subtlety, of elegance. It finishes elegantly, effortlessly, tannin is present, not an overt presence - more a fine coating to conclude. 92

Toolangi Yarra Valley Shiraz 2010

I'm a little unsure how a $20 Shiraz comes to market as a four year old. Regardless, savoury on opening, suggestive of whole bunch - 20% inclusion of stems - cassis, bramble/briar.

Peppery, hints of charred meat, violets. Seems quite closed, flashes of eucalypt; good savoury body - fruit appears somewhat lacking.

Medium bodied, fine grain tannin, good length but somewhat lacking in cohesion and presence to be considered 'better' - however one approaches such a qualitative assessment. 89
