Jules Taylor Sauvignon Blanc 2024

So 2025 marks the twenty-fifth vintage for Jules Taylor, and with this release you can see where twenty-four years of winemaking excellence can get you!

A delightfully expressive example of the variety and place. From the go it's red apple skin, passionfruit, blackcurrant leaf and a suggestion of the hallmark gooseberry, here honed rather than allowed free reign.

The palate possesses a quartzy minerality, with a little salinity roaming through the finish. A lovely example. 93

Forrest Chardonnay 2022

Creamy, nutty, nougat oak on offer. Immediately familiar, inviting - yellow nectarine and fine spice hints.

The palate shows a little toast, married to ripe fruit. A lovely balance of fruit and oak in unison here.

There's palate weight, width and length - gives an all round package bound to have broad appeal. Grows in stature through the finish. 92

Jules Taylor The Jules Rosé 2021

Berry driven nose: strawberries, cream - soft, sensuous.

Palate is somewhat rounded and textural. I recommended serving pretty cool - this came wine fridge cold - to flatten the palate and accentuate the back palate.

There's enough interest to make this one with broad appeal. Could easily smash a bottle - or two - of this over lunch. 90

Jules Taylor Pinot Noir 2020

Firmer, meatier style of Pinot Noir from the Marlborough region and the hand of Jules Taylor.

Dark fruit, oak seasoning and tilled earth on offer. Stylistically it's medium to full bodied, dark fruits represent and segue to a firm - yet fine - tannin profile that carries a dark and firm line through the finish. 91

Jules Taylor Grüner Veltliner 2020

Strong intensity here, can't have been in bottle too long. It's varietal, at least, a primary offering of white
pepper, white florals, suggestions of herb, red apple skins.

Intense acidity immediately apparent on the palate, some palate texture, width and weight following shortly thereafter.

Just loses a touch of that presence through the finish. 90

Jules Taylor Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc - certainly in my mind - comes with such pre-conceived notions. Yet it’s arguably the region - and the associated stylistic connotations - that defined a new world style.

Yet, then along comes a producer such as Jules Taylor, perhaps looking to redefine a standard, or at least seek to alter the narrative.

It’s certainly an attractive proposition, in that tropical and herbal way. Yet - as with Jules’ other wines - it’s somewhat more restrained in its approach. Possessing a mineral presence that fair dances its way across the length of the palate.

It’s a sensation that leaves more than a lasting memory. Well made and persistent. 91

Jules Taylor OTQ Sauvignon Blanc 2019

OTQ represents Jules Taylor's slightly out there takes on varieties. This example rendering the Sauv more akin to Chardonnay, touches of new creamy oak and a cream laden palate.

On that, it carries some of that vanilla and cashew aspect across the palate. With that in mind, one suggests barrel Ferment and a fair portion of new oak in the mix. Regardless, it's a quality wine. 92

Jules Taylor Chardonnay 2019

Grilled stonefruit, creamy nut and nougat on the aroma; toast adds to that proposition on the palate.

A lingering toast and depth on the palate is driven by a vein of citrus acidity, a wine of lingering intensity, a wine you'll not find wanting. 92

Jules Taylor Pinot Gris 2019

Redolent of pear drop lollies, supplemented with melon and stonefruit.

Quite delicate across the palate - getting the impression that could well be a marker of these Jules Taylor wines, that and originating from a somewhat cooler clime than Aussie examples I'm used to.

There's a minerally mien across the back palate, a gentle tickle that conveys a cool edge with that. 91

Jules Taylor On The Quiet Rosé 2018

OTQ, or On The Quiet, represents a reserve range for Jules Taylor Wines.

Strawberry, touch of rhubarb, boiled lolly aspect.

Crisp, tickle of spice across the palate, crunch of acidity. Seems fairly derivative for a Pinot Noir rosé, particularly given the asking price. 89

Jules Taylor Gruner Veltliner 2018

Stonefruit with a subtle white pepper and mace-like edge, the seasoning to the fruit. It's aromatically poised, the seasoning tickling the olfactory organ.

Subtlely worked texture, a pinch of phenolics with a fine minerality across the backbone of the palate. Subtlety, balance, guile. It's a delicate wine that will have you yearning glass after glass. 92.

Felton Road Cornish Point Pinot Noir 2008

Smokey, meaty, bit of pan juice; savoury.
2012 bottle image

Silken, medium bodied, with this incredible depth of flavour. Still showing some black cherry-plum fruit character, but it's more about savoury depth - a little char even perhaps.

Effortless, sublime, length and some. 93

Giesen Clayvin Marlborough Pinot Noir 2012

Of the three Giesen single vineyard (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay) wines, I struggled to appreciate this Pinot Noir the most.

From the acclaimed 'Clayvin' vineyard, reputedly Marlborough's oldest Pinot Noir plantings, a site off which both Fromm and Tongue in Groove draw fruit, it's a dark red fruited number. Shows some deep red florals - a suggestion of hibiscus perhaps, over smoky oak scents.

Feels a little hollow on the palate, a little astringency doing little to recover this, a palate lacking the finesse often associated with the variety.

Some red berry character lurks, but overall a disappointing wine given the pedigree of its stablemates. 88

Te Mata Estate - Hawkes Bay - New Zealand

Peter Cowley - immaculately presented winemaker - of Hawke's Bays Te Mata Estate was in town recently. I took the opportunity to catch up with Peter and taste through a range of current releases. Thanks to Te Mata distributor red+white for the opportunity.

Notes are as written on the day, minor touch-ups and lyrical flourishes the only additions.

Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2014 13% $23
Vaietal: gooseberry, grassy, fresh aromatic herb (thyme). Good acid balance; crunchy acid on show - freshness; touch of texture and long on the finish 92

Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc 2013 14% $29
Peter Cowley: In the mid-90s all barrel ferment; 85% SB with a touch of Semillon. Bone dry, fruit there - touch of structure (Peter).

Barrel work evident here; softened the aromatics, creamy with vanilla flourishes. Cream, vanilla, whiff of smokey note and flinty touches. Again, softer proposition. Long on a finish with crunchy apple acid. 93/4

Te Mata Estate Chardonnay 2013 13.5% $28
One third is b/f, a third goes through malo. It's clean, stone fruit, citrus - classic Chardonnay. Touch of barrel work evident there; closed - bit of spice (cinnamon) and vanilla; citrus to sharpen up the palate. Finishes clean, bit of meal and stone fruit. 90/1

Te Mata Elston Chardonnay 2013 14% $38-40
Oak here more evident, touch of toast; meal, melon, bread/patisserie. Barrel work, fuller of body, stone fruit (grilled), touch of phenolic/ texture - not overly ‘fruit some’ - but that’s no bad thing IMO. Good length, full and pretty broad. 92/3

Te Mata Gamay Noir 2014 13% $23
About 50% whole bunch, a week in tank and then into old oak for three months - bottled.
Carries that floral, cherry, soft berry aromatics (redolent of some carbonic) with that gummy/berry character, touch of herb. Soft, berry character on the palate too - also a touch of structure/ grip present. More than just your easy-going ‘booj’ or nouveau Gamay. Some intent. Good lingering cherry finish. 91/2

Te Mata Estate Syrah 2013 $23-25
Sees a splash of Viognier, into 15% new oak for 12months. Sourced from a couple of different vineyard plots, some younger vines (planted about 2001/2). Berry, touch of spice - clove and cinnamon in the main; Structure, core of tannin that weaves its way through the palate; graphite, tannin - powdery/chalky - comes on toward the back palate. A veritable bargain at mid-$20s 91+

Bullnose Syrah 2013 $50
Off of a single vineyard, about 25 y.o., 30% new oak - 16m in barrel. Briar, red fruit, cedar oak; rub of sandy tannin, beautiful graphite tannin structure, framework to age. Cassis, fine/powdery tannin on show here - superb wine. 94

Merlot/Cabernets 2013 14% $25
Plum, berrie, hints of pencil shaving oak; powdery tannin, again structure here is exquisite. Tannin seems to firm up in the mouth. 93+

Awatea Cabernets/Merlot 2013 13.5% $42
Approximately 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and the balance being Cabernet Franc. Cedary oak here, chocolate and vanilla creme; sweeter floral flourishes tone down the bass a little. Tannin here finer, lovely chalky rub; acid touch of present - tannin drives the length, builds - it’s all about structure. Exquisite for sub $50 92/3

Coleraine 13.5% $90
Tighter, less expressive; A little like your grandpa’s study with rich wood, tobacco, old leather - you want to relax into this. Tannin seems finer again, exquisite, again structure; chocolate coated berries, length, intensity, power. Tightly coiled - think 20 years minimum. 95+

Giesen Wines The Fuder Matthews Lane Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Prepare to see Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc through a different lens.

Giesen is one of the older New Zealand wine companies, and in Australia it is the second largest distributor of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Marcel Giesen, one of three brothers involved in the running of the company, is driving a push towards limited production runs, to doing things a little differently.

Here, 'The Fuder' is so named after a 1000L German barrel. The wine in question spends one year in oak, 50% of that is new. Total production is 2000L, or 220 cases.

Carries its regional marker, albeit fine tuned: snow pea, gooseberry and aromatic herb - thyme, a suggestion of pan-tossed nuts.

The palate is a wine of contrast, layered - descending into the depths. At first ethereal, a featherlight touch to it, a sense of fragility akin to fine porcelain; the barrel character that follows is at striking odds to that intro: layered, complex, spice.

Has length, and then some, spice and acid work here in unison to give substance, presence, power. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc re-thought.

Newton Forrest Cornerstone Cabernet Merlot Malbec 2006

I'm so sorry I doubted you. There I was, prepared to give up on you, I popped you back in the fridge and forty-eight hours later, thankfully, we made up. Or, rather, I made amends.

I have previously written of the special place this wine holds in my heart, and on the occasion of the good lady's birthday I pulled this out of the wine fridge.

Initially leathery, chestnut and cedar, resinous almost. Touches of dried herb - rosemary perhaps - with a little spice. Seemed dried and stripped out, as if from a hot year.

Medium bodied, chocolate grain tannin, acid was out of balance in proportion to the fruit, that was sorely missing.

On that re-visit it was a different wine: the perfume, the elegance, harmony and balance. The components that I was missing on opening, that I fell in love with on that first occasion we met, many years before.

The tannin had resolved to the graphite form so often seen in excellent Cabernet (and blends thereof, this wine being a blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Malbec at 45/32/23% respectively) wines. Integrated, it was on top form.

It just needed time. 93

Mud House Pinot Gris 2013

Made by the highly regarded Ben Glover, the winery was recently purchased by Accolade Wines.

Expressely aromatic, lovely nuances of pear, stonefruit, citrus and even a suggestive note of nougat.

That doesn't quite carry through to the palate where there's a little tinned tropical fruit sweetness amidst a little interplay of texture. Not one to set the palate racing. 86

Nanny Goat Chardonnay 2012

Tasted in amongst a bracket of other whites. Fairly rapid tasting - tasting note as written.

Good aromatic introduction of creamy oak over stonefruit kernels, almond skins flecked with a little citrus.

The palate is quite full, textural width gained from time on lees. Retains good acidity but I'd like to see some of that channelled into more preceise length - a stlyistic preference. Still, a good Chardonnay - one I went back to for a second glass post-tasting. 90

Nanny Goat Syrah 2012

Syrah from Central Otago is an interesting proposition. Generally a region considered cool, needs judicious site selection to work.

Black fruited, a little fruits of the forest; violets with a beefy  meaty hint. Notes of spicy oak, vanilla.

White pepper, fairly open and flacid, squarely medium bodied. Juicy, and yet again that meatiness comes through the middle too. Smooth and creamy with hints of chocolate. The parts work together to create an attractive drinking proposition. 88
