De Bortoli Wood Fired Grenache 2021

An initial soft and sensuous palate yields to depth of fruit: satsuma plum, blueberry compote.

It's a pretty straight-down-the-line affair, a fine grain of tannin adds some structure to the palate profile.

Good level of sustain to the finish - steady effort here. 90

De Bortoli Grenache Wizardry Grenache Blanc 2020

For me, personally, the pick of the Grenache Wizardry range from De Bortoli, also comprising a Rosé and Grenache Noir.

This example coneys a touch of honey, with straw, grapefruit and zest.

The palate is fresh and lively, general citrus zip and freshness to it. Latterly an element of what I can best describe as soy wax/ candle comes forth, bringing with it a pithy finish of driving length.

Fleshy, textural, flavoursome. A big yes from me. Could drink this for days. 92

De Bortoli Grenache Wizardry Heathcote Grenache 2018

It's not too far a stretch for a renowned producer of Pinot Noir out of the Yarra to make a foray into Grenache from the high and volcanic climes of Heathcote.

Initial heft, of dusky and full plum and damson, suggestions of ripeness with a touch of spice and woodsmoke to set that off.

The palate shows richness and ripeness, yet with a succulence and smoothness across the middle and latter thirds.

Something like a hint of chocolate, carrying the wine across the finish line. 91

Tellurian Heathcote Rosé 2019

A right old mix of fruit here, being: Shiraz 50%, Nero d’Avola 22%, Grenache 15% and Mourvèdre 13%.

Offers gentle red fruit against something like a flint and dried herb backdrop. Bright and fresh line of acidity zips across the palate, casting a textural shadow with it.

There's spice that adds to the depth and interest, gentle phenolics adding to that. Complexity, interest, downright drinkability. Assured winemaking for sure. Get into it. 93

De Bortoli Grenache Wizardry Rosé 2019

Highly perfumed, pot pourri floral aromatics. A savoury lurks underneath, a suggestion of woodsy spice supplementing the initial brightness.

Across the palate its wickedly dry, a snap and crackle of acidity with a chalky pucker serve as a soccer player's 1-2, as if to cleanse and yet reel you back in further.

Finishes with a spicy tickle, enhancing the experience a step further. Cracking release. 92

De Bortoli Woodfired Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Sourced from De Bortoli’s own vineyard at Corop in Northern Heathcote, adding to a range that already includes Heathcote Shiraz and Heathcote Sparkling Shiraz. As a style it was intended to complement wood-fired and charcoal based cooking.

Jam packed with black fruit, it's a pretty robust red with a warming length across it.

Lick of tannin bolsters the middle, but it's rather a simple and straightforward affair. It calls for some solid grilled protein to lap it up, snags and some lamb kofta did the trick for us. 88

Syrahmi Grenache 2017

Adam Foster, Chef turned Vigneron, now of Heathcote but honed his craft in the early years with four vintages in the Rhone. And a resultant love of Grenache ensued.

Exquisitely perfumed, strawberry and raspberry, a hint of that Provencal garrigue, the florals adding to the perfume. Then, unexpectedly, a whiff of cordite in the mix, a flinty and harder edge to the softness of the berries.

Those softer elements flow - mellifluously - onto the palate. A slight crushed rock, powdery earth, phenolic rub. Generous and flowing length on a silken backbone. Jeez, Heathcote Grenache, who'd a thunk it? 93

Cush & Cush Heathcote Vermentino 2016

Ultra-fresh, fragrant - fresh herbs (Rosemary, thyme), a little citrus perhaps, over dry stones.

Soft, elegant - a little stonefruit, with a drying undertow, zestiness and phenolics for added appeal. Pretty complete package, balanced and a long drying finish that effortlessly lingers.

Concludes a trio of stunning debut releases from Cush & Cush (see also Verdelho and Grenache/Mataro).  91

Alkimi Wines 'The Good Earth' Grenache Noir 2015

Berry, perfume, subtle stem influence.

Light, lithe, supple. Just this side of medium bodied, touch of acid and spice.

Fuck, this is a wine that just demands to be consumed, to be annihilated, an absolute pleasure to drink. 90

Out of Step Wine Co Daytime Red 2015

“keep a bit of our 2015 fruit aside, make a few small batches of wine, a bit of stems, some co-fermentation, a bit of carbonic, & leave a barrel or two unsulphured & untopped, with the vision of putting these pieces together.”

The result is a dangerously drinkable. Light, easy-going.  Kind of wine where you pour a glass and find yourself doing so again shortly thereafter.

Had some substance to it: a bit of savoury character, spice, leaf, berry fruit. Sufficient to take a chill. Cracking summer red option. 91

Out of Step Wine Co. Willoughby Bridge GSM 2014

I'm enjoying the creative outputs from the guys at Out of Step Wine Co, this GSM - fruit sourced out of Heathcote - has a different vibe from wines tasted previously. Equally delicious mind.

Smells brown on opening - I'm very much into colour at present I've noticed - time and air sees a little fruit drawn forward, there's a little woody edge - like the breaking down wood in a deciduous forest, spice - cinnamon,

There's more of that spice on the palate, playful fruit crumble, the carbonics lending an easy-going, juicy edge to proceedings. It just gives the wine a smashable feel, you yearn to drink it.

Dry on the finish, savoury and spice, good on length - if not particularly memorable. But I'm guessing that's not the intent here. Could go a point higher - 89

Wild Duck Creek Springflat Shiraz 2004

Back in the days when Australia was the darling of Bob "The Nose" Parker, a run of spectacular reviews delivered Wild Duck Creek into the minds of those who hung on his Bobness' every word.

Read Campbell Mattinson's excellent "Why the French Hate Us" for more on that period and on the Estate itself.

For a wine at ten years old, still shows some degree of fruit character on the nose, largely black fruit, ripe and forward. There's creamy, residual notes of American oak - it spent 19 months in 45% new American and French.

It's full bodied, high octane, black fruited sweetness; slick, full and slippery glycerol with hints of licorice and pepper.

There's length, more like burn from the alcohol, as opposed to a glorious tail from better wines. Did I tackle it too early? Or as the fruit has faded, does the wine have very little else to offer? 89

Foster é Rocco Sangiovese Riserva 2009

Adam Foster and Lincoln Riley (aka Rocco - I think it's because he looked an adult movie star of the same name). Bottle strokers (Foster ex-Somm of the Lakehouse in Daylesford; Riley current purveyor of booze at Stokehouse).

Deep garnet in colour, cheery, hints of almond, dried herb segueing to savoury woody notes,

It's the palate where the joy happens. Ultra-smooth, cherry, boysenberry with acid still present and freshening. I'd suggested this is good for another 6-7 years at least.

Tannin is fine, drawing a savoury line of substantive length showing cherry, touches of earth and spice. Up there in price granted. 92

Chalmers Heathcote Vermentino 2011

The Chalmers family have been producing wines from varieties such as Vermentino before they were collectively and conveniently labelled as alternative. Solid wines, often available with some age on them and without charging the earth.

Opens with lemon, chalky, touch of sea-spray freshness. Hints of Summer florals backing up.

Palates shows chalky texture, slightly 'fluffy', saline fresh. Hints of cool stone present too. My recommendation is to drink cold, in plentiful supply. I paired this up on a warm Sunday avo with some wild caught prawns and a little lime aioli (or garlic mayonnaise if you prefer). 91

2010 Syrahmi Mourvédre

Adam Foster is the man behind Syrahmi - focussing on wines from the Heathcote region; l'Imposteur - wines made by Foster in France; Foster e Rocco - wines made by Foster in conjunction with Sommelier Lincoln Riley; and La La - a tribute to Guigal’s famous La Mouline, La Turque and La Landonne.
Made from the Greenstone vineyard in Heathcote, close-planted at 4545 v/ph, opens a little reductive - as can often be Mataro's way - closed, yielding little. Seeing 25% whole bunch, as the wine opens up, it shows a little herbal/ boucquet garni character.

Slowly, unfurling, revealing itself further: boysenbery, mulberry; so much more expressive on day two, open, embracing, seemingly juicy, touch of satsuma plum - a lighter guise of Mataro.

Velvet smooth entry, a little charcuterie and spice, savoury notes working in tandem with a defined fruit quality. A complex wine, a mineral edge provides additional character, tannin is fine, carrying a line that is seemingly perpetual. Concluding, it's long and sustained. Generous graphite/mineral. 92+ Very Good

Ducks in a Row Fiano 2011

Ducks in a Row are career winemaker Glenn James and PR hotshot Amanda James-Pritchard. The two met over an amphorae, but that's another story and another wine.

Fresh aromatics that, for a fleeting moment have the ability to take you back to the warmth of summer during these cooler months. Attractive, with fresh green herbs, a little pea and honey.

Clean with good crisp acids, hints of florals, herbs grassy notes with a citrus undercurrent. Concludes with a smooth, if a not exceptionally lengthy finish. 90 – Good

Domaine Tournon Mathilda Heathcote Shiraz 2010

Australian winery owned in its entirety by Rhone Ranger Michel Chapoutier.

Damn good value here, hedgerow and bramble interwoven with red fruit. Medium bodied, juicy - a mix of fruit, spice and a little tar.

Easy going, maybe a little too laid back - if i can really quibble? - finishes clean with a slight gummy character. 89 - Good

Foster é Rocco Rosé 2011

Rosé in Australia is undergoing a real renaissance. There are those producers who seek to  retain a little residual sugar in their wines, or at least retention of fruit sweetness, and there are those practitioners who look for texture, line and length. Adam Foster and Lincoln 'Rocco' Riley are in the latter camp.

Strawberry, delicate citrus, florals, raspberry and spicy nuances greet you.  Smooth entry, textural - the delicacy of a feather, yet with sufficient weight to carry flavour. Hints of minerality, some tartness - with cranberry making an appearance. Good acidity with lovely line and length. Excellent, driving length, drying, moreish.  92 - Very Good

Greenstone Monastrell 2008

Andrew Graham, of OZ Wine Review fame, commented that Greenstone's use of the 'Spanish' name for the grape variety may be to do with clonal selection.
This example, tasted by the glass, shows real deep seated plum, chocolate, damson/ mulberry; cornucopia of red fruits. Some spice shows on the nice. Garnet/ ruby in colour, but rather light - not as dense as other examples.

Smooth, medium bodied - almost Pinot-esque in weight, a varietal defying palate weight. Excellent flow, a framework of acid carries the wine; balanced with line and length. Spice laden, herb-tinged, slightly plummy, earthen conclusion.   91 - Very Good

Price: $14 By the Glass, $32-35 retail (per bottle)

La Pleiade Heathcote Shiraz 2007

The Pleiades, or Seven Sisters is among the nearest star clusters to Earth and is that most obvious to the naked eye in the sky.  You might also notice it as the logo of Japanese vehicle manufacturer Subaru.

In this case it is a collaborative winemaking effort between Ron Laughton of Jasper Hill and M.Chapoutier of the Rhone.  The partnership has two labels Agly Brothers of Rousillon and this, La Pleiade of Heathcote - one of only 500 dozen produced.

The wine smells dark, earthen, a touch of leather and prune.  It's inky, dense and quite concentrated.  But for all that, it is a wine of incredible balance and structure.  Yes, tannins are quite assertive and contribute to an overall sense of concentration.

It kind of leaves one feeling that they have worked for the wine, yet without feeling violated or overwhelmed.
