Feudo Arancio Rosso Riserva 2019

Rich, chocolatey; whiffs of smoke over plum sauce.

Slick and glossy entry: plum fruit, bright prime and central to the theme of the wine. Falls off a bit through the final third, not quite matching the bright promise of the early primacy of fruit.

That said, still a fair throw of length here. 91

Feudo Arancio Quèto Nero d'Avola 2021

Baked raspberry, warm earth, chocolate mud cake vibes. That's not intended to make it sound simple, rather convey the comely aromatics that emanate.

Mid to full weight on the palate, touch of warmth, baking spices - palate presence building, the wine growing in stature. Fine grain of tannin set against the warming presence against the baked red fruit that re-emerges through the mid-final third. 91

Feudo Arancio Nero d'Avola 2021

Classic Sicilian variety at a very friendly price.

Plum and kirsch notes with a herb and savoury edge.

The palate is supple, lithe, hints of baked raspberry across the palate. True tannin profile, with a roughish edge that gives grip across the final movement through the palate. 90

Tellurian Heathcote Rosé 2019

A right old mix of fruit here, being: Shiraz 50%, Nero d’Avola 22%, Grenache 15% and Mourvèdre 13%.

Offers gentle red fruit against something like a flint and dried herb backdrop. Bright and fresh line of acidity zips across the palate, casting a textural shadow with it.

There's spice that adds to the depth and interest, gentle phenolics adding to that. Complexity, interest, downright drinkability. Assured winemaking for sure. Get into it. 93

Feudo Arancio Riserva 2015

Nero d'Avola, from the varieties home in Sicily. Of the finished wine, 30% is aged in steel to preserve the complex character of ripe red fruit, while the remaining 70% ages for 8-10 months in French oak barrels to soften the tannins and to add structure to this elegant wine.

The components are then blended to age a little longer together, first in steel and then in the bottle for an additional 12 months.

Shy initially, a touch of oak char and woodsy spice set to black fruit. It's Plummy, mulberry like fruit set makes itself present across the palate.

Tannin is fine, minerally and providing good carry. I'd suggest it needs protein to complement the tannin profile. Finish is moderate, touch of acidity for added freshness, feel and flow. 92

Feudo Arancio Nero d'Avola 2018

In 2000 Gruppo Mezzacorona recognised the untapped potential of Sicily and invested in replanting and rebuilding two estates along the ventilated Southern coast of the island. A significant producer from the island.

I gave this a good decant prior. On pouring it's deep, dark, sullen - with woody spice adding to that. Somewhat like dipping into Grandpa's rolling baccy pouch whilst sitting in front of a log fire that crackles away.

Touches of fennel add an aromatic lift; the palate is plush and nigh sensuous with a chewy tannin profile that you feel compelled to roll around the palate. It certainly carries a relaxing vibe to it; languid, unhurried. 91

Hither & Yon Rosato 2018

Essentially made in two batches, the Muscat Rouge and Carignan, then the remainder. It's a right old blend, being: Carignan 35%, Muscat Rouge 33%, Nero d'Avola 15%, Grenache 9%, and Touriga 8%.

Subtle Berry aromatics, hint of musk. Dry, phenolic almost powdery edges, yet crisp and long on a citrus acidity. Delivers long, shifts a little, second pour settling into itself. 90

Golden Grove Tranquillo Rosso 2017

Tranquillo Rosso, or peaceful red, a blend of Durif (40%), Malbec (33%), Nero d'Avola (18%) and Barbera (9%).

A soft and gentle red, subtle fruit betwixt elements of savoury.

The palate shows a youthful acidity, assertive in how it meanders its way across the palate. In that nouveau vibe, it has that air of nonchalance that has the casual drinker reeled in glass after glass.

Posesses a reasonable generosity of spirit and intent and yet is Tranquillo in its flow to its conclusion. 89

Golden Grove Nero d'Avola 2018

All natural ferment in tank, with elevage in 1 and 2 year old French barriques for eight months.

Wonderfully expressive, just on pour alone it invites: this positively vibrant, almost shimmering, magenta in the glass. Its dense black fruit aromas waft out of glass, that curious mix of fruit imbued with savoury, as if of a little hedgerow or such.

Lithe and supple, fleet of foot around the palate, with a generous tickle of spice along the core of the tongue. Fresh and at you acidity, the wine’s nervous system along which it ripples and bristles with energy.

Tannin seems an afterthought; fine, soft and powdery - leaving a memory of what came before it, undoubtedly leaving you yearning for more. 92

Golden Grove Estate Nero d'Avola 2016

A whiff of the overflowing ashtray married to some deep Plum and black cherry aromatics.

That curious interplay of fruit and savoury character, residual oak remnants linger, hickory like smokiness on the back palate. A delicate line of acidity carries black pepper to its conclusion.

Wouldn't look out of place against some Sicilian examples, of course with a Granite Belt twist. 91

d'Arenberg The Danger Mouse Nero d'Avola 2018

A wonderfully fragrant first release, the only I'd suggest is perhaps how quickly you'd consume this given the aromatic seduction. It's floral, redolent of violets, segueing to seductive fruit, plums and Mulberry.

The tannins tale it on a further ride, altogether more savoury, earthen, nay ferrous. That gorgeous interplay of fruit and savoury that Italian varieties, particularly in McLaren Vale, *can* do so well.

Acidity adds an additional kick, (fleeting glimpse of chocolate too) to freshen things up, as if to give a secondary motion, and yet deliver a generous tail of savoury flavour. 92

Hither & Yon Nero d'Avola 2016

"The fruit was handpicked in the early morning of April 1 and delivered to the winery where it was then gently de-stemmed and crushed into open top fermenters. A cold soak took place for 5 days, with gentle hand plunging taking place 3 times per day. Fermentation was for 8 days, with a high portion of whole berries being retained, then lightly pressed to tank where the free run juice and pressings were combined. Once the wine was dry, it was sent to 6-7 year old French barriques, all of the process to retain vineyard and fruit freshness. A light screen filtration, then bottling; completing the process on October 17, 2016 and sealed under Stelvin screw cap."

Boysenberry - often strikes me as a very regional aroma - with varietal elements of woody spice, spice that just lifts things, tickles the nasal cavity.

Quite a chewy wine, somewhat at odds to that aromatic intro that suggests lightness. That’s no criticism, it provides something to latch onto, to take into the mouth, roll it around and savour its decent length. Good mix of fruit, nicely pitched acidity, herbal twists - and you’d suggest the faintest line of aniseed.

Good length, fine line of tannin adds to that. Another ripper. 91

Old Jarvie 'The Charitable' Nero d'Avola Aglianico Rosé 2016

Interesting colour - almost twilight/dusky pink, veering to garnet red. Striking.

Underlying musk, touch of pomegranate, cherry and raspberry.

Good balance: texture, chalky mouthfeel, perky acid that washes across the palate leaving a trail of flavour to follow up. Gives good length: red fruit derived in its essence. 90

Lino Ramble Tom Bowler Nero d'Avola 2014

Lino Ramble is Andy Coppard and Angela Townsend, both plying their respective trades via day jobs at Kay Bros in McLaren Vale.

Redcurrant jelly - deeper, darker savoury elements, cured meat and a little balsamic - bucolic you might say.

Medium bodied, hoi sin, plum; savoury, Woody - I couldn't escape the aroma of the small square of 90% Lindt Excellence under my nose. Good tannin structure, comes afore a juice laden finish. Good wine. 91

Coriole Nero d'Avola 2015

Expressly aromatic wine, exquisitely perfumed: cherry compote, with a seasoning of sage and perhaps some fresh coriander seed.

Light, supple - a lightness, fleet of foot as it dances it way around the palate - a sting in the tail: spice tinged, aniseed twists, black fruit that just adds depth and volume.

It's fresh, abounds with acidity and will have have you emptying your glass quicker than you can say: "by Jove, that's a tasty wine". Such great drinking. 93

Hither & Yon Nero d'Avola 2015

Seen quite a price increase since I first tasted the 2013 vintage (tastings), but for me the brand and wines out of the portfolio remain some of the most consistent, drinkable and exciting out of the region.

Jubey, black fruited, juicy, heavenly, intoxicating, alluring. The barest hint of licorice, fennel, touch of grilled linguica, more about black fruit. Medium bodied, easy going, straddles a line of sweet black fruit with some Italianate seasoning. 90

Hand Crafted by Geoff Hardy Nero d'Avola 2014

A bigger, riper manifestation of a variety that is making a name for itself across a few select regions in South Australia.

Initially it presents itself as smokey, dusty, a little ash over ripe cherry; the patient will be rewarded, with time it's more about the fruit - deep, dark, glossy black cherry.

On initial opening, red fruits abound on the palate initially, but it appears dry, dusty and flat thereafter. Showed better a day after opening, more vital, fruit shining beyond that flat profile - cherry and herb.

OK length, but on initial views it never shifts into second gear. It's certainly a darker, broodier manifestation than the light 'n' juicy wines currently en vogue.

Caveat emptor: difficult to call - 86 initially, redeeming itself latterly 89.

Amato Vino Nero d'Avola 2014

Throws the wood spice of the 20% whole bunch over cherry and - what seems to me - a little almond.

Light, juicy with some flashy acidity that enlivens. Vibrant- that's the word I am looking for - with licorice adding an extra dimension. That said it is really that freshness that reels you in.

Not terribly long on length - no real drama when it's existence in bottle and glass is equally temporal. 89

Hither & Yon Nero d'Avola 2014

Nero lives up to its name here, with an inky darkness emanating from the glass. Seems 2014 was a strong year too (admittedly from a low sample set).

Red and black fruits and something - I wrote at the time - like hanging your head over a pan of sizzling pork and fennel snags. Delightful herbal and spice notes too.

Plump entry - cushioned and soft on the tongue - depth and spice kick-in, a fine rub of tannin. More licorice and fennel seed spice mops up at the back. So delicious, so moreish. Grand drinking for something that can be had for a shade over 20 beans. 91

Coriole Nero d'Avola 2014

Third bottling and second commercial release of Coriole's Nero d'Avola - a variety that is quietly going about getting itself established in a range of regions across South Australia.

Made in a drink now, very approachable style - a 'Joven' Nero if I can license that Spanish term for what is a variety of Italian origin. You'd expect to see the style morph and finesse over time as the vines become established.

Bright, forward, cherry and baked cherry pie; dried herb and aniseed add to the equation, but really it's all about the juicy red fruit freshness.

Medium bodied, a juicy crunch of acidity; jubey, a touch of spice, easy tannin and cracked pepper. I just found it so easy going, so refreshing - yet with a little savoury tail offering a nice contrast. 90
