d'Arenberg The Hermit Crab Marsanne 2020

Honeysuckle, flowering Jasmine - a very spring like vibe here in this Hermit Crab, even if suggestively it's hibernating for the next couple of months perhaps.

Nice mid-weight, acid a touch sharp and seems out of focus - compared to that lovely aromatic intro. 88

Nomad's Garden Skin Contact Field Blend 2019

Nomad's Garden, a sub-brand of El Dorado road, from memory a labour of love to restore a much neglected vineyard in Beechworth, in Vic's NE.

This field blend being a Viognier and Marsanne co-ferment. Has that unmistakeable, skinsy (270 days thereon) vibe: Citrus peel, Jasmine, hints of bergamot

Slippery textured number, sliding across the palate, it's lighter in flavour that the aromatics initially indicate, clicking in at sub 10% explains that. Regardless, it's a harmoniously textured slip of a wine. 92

Tahbilk Marsanne 2019

By their own admission, Tahbilk - in Victoria's Nagambie Lakes - has the world's largest single holding of Marsanne, including plantings dating back to 1927.

Opens with a nigh musky, husky accent over softer florals and stonefruit. Delicate palate, subtle textural roundness that calming envelopes the palate.

A gentle phenolic rub that casts a fine shadow across the palate, conveying citrus tinged with tropical fruit hints. Not quite packing the depth and intensity that it can - at this early juncture - it has the pedigree to age well. 90

Paul Mas Marsanne 2018

Quite unsure how this can be pumped out, exported and retailed for under ten bucks - particularly when it - at least - smells varietal.

It's a soft and sensuous blend of florals, smatterings of stonefruit and a little confectioners creme.
Yes it's a little devoid on the palate in interest terms, but offers up  a delicate texture married to a subtle acidic carriage.

Light carry of stonefruit nectar across the finish. There's balance and a gentle persistence. You could do far worse for your money. 87

d'Arenberg The Old Bloke & Three Young Blondes Shiraz 2015

Upon initial release this wine proved rather controversial and divisive, with Chester Osborn (perhaps the old bloke in the wine's title) bringing prime McLaren Vale Shiraz with Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne (the supposed young blondes).

Red fruit: raspberry and chocolate; fresh earth, summer sun, remnants of oak - older.

The palate shows the fruit, balanced juxtaposed against a savoury edge. Tannins are fine, nigh silty - persistent and delivering on a generous length of flavour.

Latterly, perhaps with just a little time, the 'blondes' come out to play: adding a roundness to the wine, softening the full impact of the Shiraz without sacrificing the length. More than a nod to the Northern Rhone, from the rolling hills of McLaren Vale. 93

Warramunda Marsanne 2017

Buttery, citrus, stonefruit awash across the palate. It has a nutty like aromatic that doesn't necessarily allude to what the palate offers.

Quite light on alcohol, given its stated 12%, normally seeing the variety (and its Rhone brethren Viognier and Roussanne) clocking in the 13s. Light touch of vanilla, a moderately creamy aspect to it. Delightful wine. 90

d'Arenberg The Hermit Crab Viognier Marsanne 2018

Has this golden aura, a succulent and rounded aromatic profile with stonefruit top notes. The Viognier is principal variety here and it shows.

It's rich and loaded on the palate, the vanilla edged Marsanne staking its claim here. It's got a sweeter edge too, akin to a baked apricot pastry or such. It's fleshiness singing, filling the void of your oral cavity. 90

d'Arenberg Hermit Crab Viognier Marsanne 2017

Apricot nectar leads, carries with it a white pepper - perhaps mace too - and gingerbread spice.

Palate offers vanilla creme, leading to a roundness of palate. It grows in stature, lime and tropical elements added to the picture. Pulls up a little short - minor quibble at $15, good and interesting drinking otherwise. 89

Alkimi The Good Earth Marsanne 2016

Good to see Yarra Marsanne on offer at a fairly affordable price, it’s something I think of as being at least north of $30.

The aromatics here are fairly intriguing: cut fennel, honeyed florals for sure, but also backed up with a liberal sprinkling of exotic spice. Exotic a term - one imagines - is relative to your familiarity with your spice rack.

Reasonable degree of texture, with a generous length of lemon balm flavour coursing through the middle. It feels fairly nimble on the palate, backed up with a little phenolic pinch. A resurgent wash of citrus across the back palate just reels you back in for a second sip, lo and behold it’s an action you find yourself repeating. Great drinking. 92

d'Arenberg The Hermit Crab Viognier Marsanne 2015

Blend of Viognier (58%) and Viognier (42%). Carries an interesting herbal edge on opening, kinda like a cold Jasmine tea perhaps. Requisite florals, a little apricot nectar.

More stonefruit on the palate, more defined this time. Sweeter, more of that nectar seen earlier.

Not particularly profound in length, or textural. But pleasant enough.  88

Turkey Flat White Blend 2015

A blend of Marsanne (63%), Viognier (19%) and Roussanne (18%).

Scents of white florals, suggestive stonefruit and of a little vanilla creme patisserie.

Honeyed nuances, a little nougat, under-ripe mandarin segments; zest and gentle spice. Early - judicious - picking has given a line of acid about which layers of texture hang, like mille-feuille of flavour and mouthfeel.

Good length, carried about acid, a little toastiness. Enough about it to make it one to both seek to consume and to savour. 91

Lark Hill Mr V Marsanne Roussanne Viognier 2014

Assured golden notes of honey, master stock, florals and stone fruit. Colour suggests some skin contact - a deep golden hue.

Textural wonder, a little grip and weight. Citrus and cream are absolutely spot on. Unyielding savoury length. Superb. 93

Lark Hill Wines Mr V Biodynamic Viognier Marsanne Roussanne 2013

White florals, peering around the corner a little mandarin and stonefruit and touch of a vanilla cream/custard.

Spice and textural rich offer a different experience for the introduction to the palate; spiced-honeyed-mead meets master stock backed up with a little phenolic bitterness. Savoury hints on the back palate - a wine of many parts, a wine of much interest. 92

Tahbilk Marsanne 2013

Opened this pair with 'Summer Pasta' (creme fraiche, garlic and lemon zest sauce; zucchini, yellow squash and some frozen peas) as I thought so many of the flavours and aromas would be complimentary. Winner.

Suggestions of honey and honeydew melon, florals and citrus zest. Fresh, fragrant and fulfilling. Price listed here is the full-tote price, get yourself signed up to the mailing list and avail of excellent discounts.

Entry shows a continuation of the aromatics, that freshness acting with excellent textural mouth feel and a lovely clip of acid acting as guide. It is that acid that provides a indication as to cellar-worthiness, plus also allows the wine to cut through the creamy sauce I paired it up with.

The texture just adds another level of enjoyment to the wine. Bravo. 91/92 - your choice.

Tahbilk 1927 Vines Marsanne 2004

At nine years of age, this still has the spring of youth in its step. Made for the long haul, picked accordingly, and so I subsequently learned modelled on Hunter Semillon.

That aromatic freshness is there from the first ball: citrus, particularly lemon with hints of blossom, preserved lemons and wax. Delve a little deeper to reveal a little nutty, pithy, fibrous edge - fresh ginger, galangal perhaps.

Bracing acidity, fore and aft, flowing through the wine - Timothy Francis Leary would have fun with this. In my notes I wrote that it was almost Riesling-esque, a fair comment on reflection. It's not so much the honeyed, nutty Marsanne that you might be used to. But do understand this: it's an incredible wine, built for the long haul and quite remarkable to be offered to market at just shy of a decade old.

Finishing fine and long, you'd have to be a bit of an acid head to appreciate it now, but at nine years old it is a mere pup. 95

Bent Road Winery Marsanne 2010

Gently honeyed, more about white florals. A little almond, a hint of citrus. Comes across as quite a gentle wine, whispering, not shouting.

Flavours flow through to the palate, there's a little texture - a slight waxy touch - my preference would have been to feel more.

Back palate shows some delicate citrus, acid flares a little, gives an extra leg-up to the wine. Slight creaminess flows on, a little more texture noted. 87/88 - Average/Good

Bird on a Wire Marsanne 2011

Texture, texture, texture. Not overlooking the aromatic department, which itself shows a creamy mix of white flowers, a soap-nut-toffee note with a fresh herb and honeyed edge.

A roll call of descriptors could be peeled off, but in some respects that would detract from where, for me, its true interest lies.

Creamy, savoury, a sharp pinprick of acidity that provides focus and conclusion on the palate. There's a mineral edged dance, a tango across the tongue.

It's too clever to be outright smashable, but by jove it commands to be savoured. 95 - Excellent

Cypress Post 2000 Frances Viognier Marsanne 2011

Good aromatics, the Viognier (75%) and Marsanne (25%) are both represented: apricot and ginger; spiced and honeyed parsnip. Textural, with nutty complexity.

Spice toward the back end with some phenolic grip. Good length, leaving you with something long after the final sip. Doesn’t show its 14% alcohol and still remarkably carries a touch of acid at that alcohol level. 90 - Good

Murray Street Vineyards Black Label Marsanne 2011

What Jerry McGuire really wanted to say in the film of the same name was: "show me the texture" and he'd have no doubt been talking about blends or varietal wines made from "White Rhone" grape varieties.  This Marsanne from the Barossa's Murray Street Vineyards is one such example that will challenge the fruit-ophiles and score a win for team texture.

A slight honeyed note, with some honeysuckle, delicate florals, toasted pine nut and a hint of flaked almond.  Clean profile in the mouth, good acid with a hint of spiced pear.  I just love the textural nuttiness on these kind of wines.

Comes with good length, combination of acid and texture, working in unison, weaving their magic to deliver.  Match with Moroccan chicken tagine.  88 - Good.

Murray Street Vineyards Viognier Marsanne 2010

A 60/40 blend respectively, the wine is a representation of its constituent parts.  Aromatically of Viognier: apricot, peach and a touch of honeysuckle.  It's pretty and very approachable.

The palate, in contrast, shows quite a 'nutty' entry - the Marsanne presenting itself - with weight, texture, phenolic characters and a mineral edge.  This segues to a slight citrus tinged, gently acidic finish.

Refreshing and approachable, to the uninitiated the contrast between the two components may be a little confronting.  Check out Wine Buzz Team tasting the wine at Murray Street's Cellar Door here (about 4m20s in).
