Domaine Nicolas Potel Petit Chablis 2022

Briny hints, Beurre bosc pear, Meyer lemon skin. There's a lovely freshness and appeal, leading to a palate that feels tight, clean.

Chalk and sea-shell lead-in across the length of the palate. Subtle honeyed-meets fresh green herb bent, Tarragon perhaps. Appropriately I paired this with creamy chicken Tarragon - a good match or auto-suggestion? 91

Pattes Loup AC Chablis 2010

This picture made me buy the 2009 version of this wine.  The fact it was so damn good had me chomping at the bit to try and find the 2010 version.

Has some of the familiar lemon creme pastry elements to it, flaked almonds, wheaty-mealy note with some honeyed parsnip.

The palate sees a briny, oyster shell note familiar to Chablis.  Weightier than I recall, fulsome, a hint of mineral - pebble.  Acid is good, not the rapier like thrust of many  Chablis.  Gone is the soaring secondary movement of the '09, instead replaced by greater depth, harmony -  well pitched .

My final memory is of honey and lemon, a perfect tincture as the wine slides down the back palate.  93 - Very Good

Pattes Loup Chablis 2009

This is how I expect French organic growers and wine-producers to look.  Especially ones that oversee a label called Pattes Loup (Wolf's Paw).

It was on the basis of this gentleman's photo that I wanted to buy the wine - that it was talked up by the retailer added to the requirement to buy.

Farmed organically, hand picked and fermented in stainless steel and 700 litre concrete eggs.  It is this that gives the wine the incredible texture and richness on the palate.  On approach the wine offers a hint of cashew nuttiness, a suggestion of rich buttery pastry, but it's on the palate where it abounds with citrus.  In the mouth it feels dense and loaded, it is not over-bearing.

The 2nd phase palate loads up on acid - in a soaring movement - electrifying and enlivening the mouth.  The finish shows some clean mineral layers leaving the mouth with a fantastic record of what had come before.

If you have the opportunity to try this wine, do so.  In fact - get your credit card and place an order with Eurocentric Wines.  Those in the know reckon that Thomas Pico's reputation is on a deservedly upward trajectory and future wine prices are likely to follow suit.

UK Wines - Part 2

Second round up of some wines shared/ tasted on a recent trip to the UK.  The wines I bought personally definitely showed an Old World leaning, just reflecting what I have been tasting recently and that I am able to buy good old world wines for much cheaper than I can in Australia.

Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon 2003 10.5% £26.95
Delicate aromas of lemon and lightly buttered toast present themselves, giving way to a palate exhibiting some spritz and minerality. Good structure, acid carrying a line through to a persistent conclusion.

William Fevre 2007 1er Cru Les Vaillons Chablis  % £17.95
Delicate florals, segue into intense mineral laden palate. Fine, filling and driving finish. Chablisienne to it's minerally core, that I can get this in the UK for around $30 both pleases and saddens.

Guigal Gigondas 2006 14% £12.96
Good aroma: Raspberry and dried herbs. Savoury body, rich and complex.  Generously spicy finish.

Blason des Papes 2009 14% £13.19
Much more fruit in this Grenache, Syrah, Mourvédre and Cinsault blend than with the Gigondas. Good redcurrant aroma leading through to a medium bodied palate.  Less spice on the finish. Pleasurable drinker.

Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner 2010 % £8.06
delicate light florals on the nose, entry shows a mineral laden palate sweeping through to an acidic finish. Dry.

Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru 2007 13% £19.95
Berry aromatics, red and black, leading to a sour cherry palate.  Elegant, filling of mouth; well structured the finish trails off leaving a memorable impression.
