Mitchell Grenach Mataro Shiraz 2014

Red fruit - cranberry and raspberry; subtle herb, residual oak elements.

Nicely rounded entry, soft and almost chewy. Delicacy and softness, fine-grain of tannin. Red/black fruit mix sits comfortably throughout the wine, sitting well on the finish.

There's a savoury spike, a little licorice at its conclusion. Very good value - particularly given the release as a four year old, an excellent red vintage in Clare Valley. 90

Cush & Cush Grenache Mataro 2016

Bright, vibrant, berry driven goodness. Stylistically right up my alley, is it classically good or great? No. Is it the sort of wine that's perfect for quaffing with gay abandon? Abso-ding-dong-lutely.

Medium-bodied, something pure, unadulterated - like drinking a still fermenting wine. Fresh, vibrant - a recurring theme - juicy, a hint of minerality, structure and spice.

Black fruit, hint of licorice, spice - happy days and very happy drinking. 89

Ballycroft Small Berry Mataro Shiraz 2012

A blend of Mataro (51%) and Shiraz (49%).

I like how winemaker Joe Evans plays with Mataro, harnessing it’s inherent depth of aroma to capture a wine that’s like peering into the abyss. Here, Mataro has been paired with Barossa stalwart Shiraz to create a wine that offers depth, of liquorice and that heady plummy darkness.

More of the same on the palate, where some fine, sandy tannin gives the wine a textural bed about which to carry itself. No hint of its 15% alcohol, yes it’s a bigger wine, but well balanced and full of flavour.

Generous length, a little coffee note in the mix too. Could drink it for days. 92
