Lapis Luna Zinfandel 2020

Char and toast, bold aromas, certainly not subtle. It's Zinfandel - a staple of Northern California,
here  specifically the North Coast/Mendocino region, the wine sees a mix of French and American oak, a small portion (10%) new.

A lightness on the palate, sweeter edged - showing its alcohol for sure against firm tannins. Reasonable length, but it feels a little unsettled and I'm not convinced it's going to improve beyond where it's at.

For those that love them fuller in profile - go now for up to three years. 88

Rusden The Chookshed Zinfandel 2015

I've long been a fan of Rusden's wines, personally and on these pages. Something didn't quite gel with the current releases. I paired this Zin with with Jamie Oliver's sausage pasta bake - totally overpowered the dish (recipe here if that way inclined:

Oak totally dominates the wine, suppressing the aromatics - and Zin can be so beautifully aromatic, florally and perfumed. Except here.

But as so often with Rusden wines, the palate can so often belie that 'size'; I'm not suggesting the wine here is anything but full throttle, the oak is clearly evident on the palate. Glimpses of those purple fruits and florals are trying their best to burst through that shroud, but on this occasion oak wins out. There's no escape from the finish either. It really needs time, or at least a double decant. 88+

After +2hrs and a dirty double decant:
There's more peeking from behind that oak shroud, think fruit cake and aniseed twists, hints of cedar and violet florals.

It's certainly not for the feint hearted. The palate has softened with a little air, sweeter spiced hints are making themselves known and it starts to resemble the Rusden wines I've come to know. Understand that + sign.

Lowe Headstone Rosé 2017

Blend of Grenache, Zinfandel, Merlot, Pinot Gris.

An attractive aromatic mix here, as perhaps belies its composition. All too often there's a tendency to go chasing specific aromatics, when instead a general floral perhaps may suffice. A suggestion of mango skin.

A gentle mineral tickle, soft entry - the wine sitting comfortably in the palate. It's dry without any associated hardness, or firmness, certainly a wine at ease with itself. Adroitly handled. 91

Hentley Farm Zinfandel 2015

Rich, chocolatey, suggestion of vanilla, malt (oak), toffee, flowers - complex, lots on, inviting.

Rounded, soft and cushioned mouthfeel; Has the cacao richness and plushness from the aromatics, segueing to spice for depth.

Pretty lavishly textured, a Mille-feuille of layers cascading over the back palate. Savoury nuances that gently fade with time. 91

Hentley Farm The Stray Mongrel 2015

Spends time in old French (70%) and American (30%) barrels - undergo natural malolactic fermentation then returned to oak to mature for a total of 8 months.

At risk of being labelled a wine bore (it's OK, the label fits), I include such detail as it's important to the context of Hentley Farm, where it seems they are pairing back on oak a little and allowing variety and region to express themselves a little more clearly.

Sink your nose into this one folks, a comforting olfactory experience. Red fruits in the main, touch of prune, a little oak in the mix. A little hardwood

Light on entry, a little red fruit, rub of tannin and a spike of heat from the alcohol. There's reasonable length - chalky, powdery tannin. Commendable 90

Rusden 'The Chook Shed' Zinfandel 2014

Intense purple fruit, smoke, ash; oak, milk chocolate, oyster sauce.

An initial elegance, afore bold blackcurrant. It's richly spiced, Asian spice, aniseed and leather. Complex, without being over done. Balanced, poise, bold and powerful.

Finishes well, gorgeous tail of flavour, savoury and fruit. Ying and Yang. 92

Inkwell Black and Blue Fortified Late Harvest Zinfandel 2012

Beautiful bottle here (alas no image), like a large...inkwell.

Black and blue. Smells as its name suggests. Of Muscatels, rum and raisin, spice; black and blue fruit -  a little of that rancio, caramel aroma.

Thick, black, layered, delicious depth  - molasses and licorice. Then, of cherry, spice and fruitcake. Whilst it may have been 30+ degrees over Christmas here in Brisbane, this was a more than adequate substitute for a Christmas pudding for me.

Has the spirited burn - sweet, candied fruit, again fruitcake, plum pudding, sticky pudding depth and hedonistic pleasure. Mr Brown, you've done it again. 93

Mandalay Road Wines Zinfandel 2008

"A Princess.  An alcoholic, potentially jammy Princess, with super-pretty structure, and spice to burn... Bit of a bitch vineyard-wise.  Difficult to ripen without going porty.  Needs care to manage structure, weight" ~ Kate Giles, Byrne Vineyards

Undertaking some research in the twittersphere on Zinfandel in Australia (also known as Primitivo) Kate Giles, of Byrne Vineyards, was generous enough to share her knowledge on the variety.

Mandalay Road is located about 60KMs inland of Bunbury, in a wine-producing region known as Geographe.  The wine itself shows red berry fruit - hints of strawberry, blackcurrant pastille.  It's rustic, savoury showing oak and cedary notes.

Smooth, spice-laden with dry raspy tannin - for a wine at 15%+ it didn't particularly show that level of alcohol.  Savoury, with generous length and a mushroom jus finish.  89 - Good
